Injury Care

Our goal is to ensure that your experience with us is as smooth and stress-free as possible, starting from the moment you decide to trust us with your care.

Our Approach to Injury Management

Early, high-quality care facilitates optimal recovery. Our model emphasizes evidence-based protocols, communication with stakeholders, and tracks outcomes.

After each initial visit, our providers will achieve a transactional call with the worker’s designated employer representative or safety professional. One key purpose of the transactional call is to devise a stay-at-work plan when medically appropriate.  Ideally, a Worker Compensation Information form that proscribes contact information for the responsible party is completed and brought by the worker for his or her initial visit.  Existing client companies may clarify sponsorship during transactional call.

Our collaborative approach aligns all stakeholders and supports timely, safe return to function.

Again, excellent up-front care positively impacts outcomes evidenced by internal review, as well as independent data generated by workers’ compensation brokers and general contractors.

Injury Care Outcome Data

Our value proposition practice model is substantiated by anecdotal feedback from our clients as well as specific outcome data, such as the following:

  • Internal Chart Review May 24, 2021-November 30, 2021, all client companies, and all injury acuity types:

    • Of 542 new injury visits at OccMedCIC, 465 (86%) required no lost time.

  • External verified claim statistics October 01, 2019-October 01, 2022, for a 400,000 sq foot Turner Construction project in Cambridge:

    • Of 109 new injury visits treated by OccMedCIC providers, 99 (91%) required no lost time and only 3% were litigated.

    • Medical and indemnity costs as of December 2022 were reported at $0.24 per manhour.

BBJI OccMed aspires to replicate such outcome statistics by leveraging the OccMedCIC care model. This should result in significant cost savings for the client which can positively impact EMR (Experience Modifier Ratio), especially when paired with a high-quality client Safety Program.

Active Functional Recovery

At the first visit, each injured worker receives a customized self-care program and the tools needed to begin immediately at home.

This proactive approach empowers workers, reduces unnecessary immobilization, and minimizes avoidable therapy referrals. At follow-up visits, we review progress and reassess modified duty status as needed.

Telehealth

Telehealth is available when clinically appropriate, particularly for uncomplicated follow-ups or minor wound triage.

Initial injury evaluations are strongly preferred in person to establish rapport, obtain vital signs, perform a complete physical examination, and access imaging when needed.

Workplace Injury & Wound Care

BBJI OccMed treats a broad range of workplace injuries and coordinates care to minimize lost time and support functional recovery.

Services include:

  • Incision and drainage procedures

  • Culture and sensitivity testing

  • Foreign body exploration and removal

  • Emergency Department wound follow-up

  • Suturing and complex wound repair

We have advanced expertise in complex, layered closures and manage burns, crush injuries, grinder injuries, and other power tool trauma requiring sophisticated wound care.

After-Hours Access

Responsive aftercare is a key differentiator of BBJI OccMed.

Patients receive direct contact information for a provider should urgent concerns arise, such as early signs of infection. Established employer clients have direct off-hours access to our team.

For projects requiring 24/7 coverage, including time-sensitive construction operations, customized on-call arrangements can be developed to ensure access to urgent suture care and injury management.

If Emergency Department care has occurred, we can assume follow-up care, manage work status, and coordinate return-to-work planning.

Orthopedic Integration

Our orthopedic expertise allows us to definitively manage a high percentage of injuries in-house. Splints and braces are fitted onsite, and therapy coordination is seamless.

We provide streamlined access to X-ray, CT, and advanced musculoskeletal imaging with fellowship-trained interpretation. When subspecialty care is required, we coordinate timely consultation and imaging approvals, with strong communication throughout the care cycle. This includes ready potential for reverse referrals (e.g., from orthopedic surgeon to BBJI OccMed to assist with modified duty transitions when indicated and feasible).

Eye Injury Expertise

Eye injuries are common in occupational settings. Our providers are skilled in evaluating and treating ocular foreign bodies, including pH testing, fluorescein staining, and ultraviolet light examination. We remove foreign bodies and address residual rust rings when present.

Diagnostic & Advanced Imaging

Our locations ensure access to high-quality imaging equipment, experienced technicians, rapid digital reporting, and real-time radiology consultation.

We assist with logistics as needed, including wheelchair transport to imaging services.

For advanced imaging such as MRI, our team manages documentation, request and authorization efficiently. Our expertise in Massachusetts treatment guidelines supports timely approvals. Imaging can often be scheduled near the worker’s residence, with digital access to images and reports for coordinated follow-up care.
