Meet Dr. Alan Curtis
Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon | Sports Medicine & Shoulder Specialist
Dr. Alan S. Curtis is a nationally recognized, board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and advanced arthroscopic shoulder surgery. With more than three decades of experience, he is widely respected for his expertise in rotator cuff repair, revision shoulder surgery, shoulder instability, and complex shoulder reconstruction. As a founding partner of Boston Bone & Joint Institute, Dr. Curtis is dedicated to helping patients return to the activities they enjoy.
Dr. Curtis earned his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he also completed his orthopedic surgery residency. He further advanced his training through a Sports Medicine fellowship at the prestigious Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI), one of the nation's leading centers for arthroscopic and shoulder surgery.
His practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder injuries and sports-related conditions using advanced minimally invasive and arthroscopic techniques. He provides specialized care to athletes and active individuals of all ages, including those with complex shoulder conditions.
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Curtis is a Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine and has spent decades educating and mentoring orthopedic surgeons. A recognized authority in shoulder arthroscopy and sports medicine, he has lectured extensively throughout the United States and internationally and has authored numerous scientific publications advancing the treatment of shoulder injuries.
Dr. Curtis currently serves as President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), one of the world's leading organizations dedicated to arthroscopic surgery. He is also an active member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), and a Fellow of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS).
In sports medicine, Dr. Curtis is well known as one of two team physicians for the Boston Celtics and has also served as team physician for Northeastern University athletics. His extensive experience treating athletes has helped establish him as one of New England's leading shoulder and sports medicine specialists.
