Meet Dr. Paul Weitzel

Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and Knee and Shoulder Specialist

Dr. Paul Weitzel is a highly respected orthopedic surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder surgery, with a strong clinical focus in sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures. He provides expert care at New England Baptist Hospital and affiliated outpatient surgical centers throughout the Greater Boston area. He is also a former team physician of the Boston Celtics, Tufts Univeristy and Wellesley High School.

With extensive experience in minimally invasive techniques and a long-standing commitment to patient-centered care, Dr. Weitzel helps patients, from athletes to active adults, overcome pain, recover from injury, and return to the activities they enjoy.


Training, Teaching, and Trusted Care

Dr. Weitzel received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He then completed his residency through the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Surgery Program, followed by advanced fellowship training at Tufts-New England Medical Center.


A passionate educator, Dr. Weitzel serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, where he plays an integral role in shaping the next generation of orthopedic surgeons as a core faculty member for the New England Baptist Sports Medicine Fellowship.  He was awarded the Bill Southmayd Teaching Prize in 2025.  His dedication to education complements his clinical expertise and reflects his broader commitment to excellence in the field.


Leading the Field in Sports Medicine

As a sports medicine subspecialist, Dr. Weitzel provides care tailored to the needs of athletes and active individuals. His areas of focus include treatment for rotator cuff injuries, ACL and ligament injuries, cartilage damage, and shoulder and knee arthritis. His clinical interests lie in arthroscopy and joint preservation, offering advanced treatment options that minimize recovery time while maximizing results.


Recognized for Excellence

Dr. Weitzel has been an annual Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2012, an honor reflecting peer recognition for clinical expertise and exceptional patient care. He also holds a subspecialty certificate in orthopedic sports medicine.
