Meet Dr. Jacob Kirsch

Board-Certified Orthopedic Surgeon and Shoulder Specialist

Dr. Jacob Kirsch is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing exclusively in shoulder conditions at Boston Bone and Joint Institute and New England Baptist Hospital. He is also an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Kirsch focuses solely on shoulder care, treating the full spectrum of pathology, from rotator cuff tears and arthritis to complex instability and failed prior surgeries. He uses both arthroscopic and open surgical techniques and is one of few in the region performing advanced procedures such as tendon transfers and bone loss reconstruction.

He earned his medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine, graduating with honors, and completed his residency at the University of Michigan, where he also served as a team physician for the men’s basketball team. He completed a Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at the Rothman Institute and furthered his training in Lyon, France with world-renowned shoulder experts.

Clinical Focus, Academic Impact

Dr. Kirsch is a prolific contributor to the field, with more than 75 peer-reviewed publications and over 13 textbook chapters. He trains orthopedic residents at Tufts and serves as a faculty member in the New England Baptist and Mass General Shoulder Fellowships. A respected national and international lecturer, he also reviews for leading journals, including the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

His professional affiliations include the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was recently named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor for 2025.

A Patient-Centered Approach

Dr. Kirsch believes that the best care starts with listening. He emphasizes shared decision-making, recognizing that every patient’s goals and lifestyle are unique. Many shoulder issues can be treated non-surgically, and surgery is only recommended when necessary or after conservative options have been exhausted.

By focusing solely on shoulder problems, Dr. Kirsch offers a level of specialized expertise and consistency that leads to better, more predictable outcomes, especially in complex or revision cases.
